Nobody else counts the doors.
Daniel rents the first apartment he finds with a light over the door, and on his first day the landlord walks him down the hallway and counts off the doors. 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, and then 308. Daniel is the sort of person who counts things, and he is the only person in the building who notices.
