Apartment 307

Apartment 307

Nobody else counts the doors.

Daniel rents the first apartment he finds with a light over the door, and on his first day the landlord walks him down the hallway and counts off the doors. 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, and then 308. Daniel is the sort of person who counts things, and he is the only person in the building who notices.

What it teaches while you read

  • Narrated in simple past, written around the perfect tenses rather than through them.
  • Short declarative sentences and ordinary, high frequency words.
  • Built on things you can count, so the meaning survives any translation.

We kept the sentences short and the words ordinary, and wrote around the perfect tenses every time the story reached for one. The dread is built on things a learner can count, doors and knocks, so it arrives through structure rather than through vocabulary.

Be first through the door.
