Three Offers
Three days, three offers, one shop on the coast road.
Rosa is closing up her shop for the season on a road the locals call the low road. A man she has never met comes in and offers to buy the place off her. She says no. He is back the next day with a better offer, and the day after that with something that is not an offer at all. A child's bicycle has hung unsold in her window for years.
What it teaches while you read

We wrote this one to sit directly on top of a lesson. The conditional carries chapter one and the unreal past carries chapter two, and both of them are delivered by two people talking across a counter rather than by a table of endings. Nobody in it is a villain and nobody raises their voice.
